Looking for free rendering software for students? SchoolCAD's Render Studio makes photo-real renders of a design with real timber, acrylic and metal materials, right in the browser, for free. There's no AI, nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. Alongside it, Render picture (PNG) gives a quick, sharp image of the view, and Video (MP4) records a turntable or a build animation for folios and presentations.
Render Studio: free photo-real rendering
The Render Studio traces how light bounces around the scene, so the picture starts grainy and sharpens as it renders.
- Click Render in the top bar.
- Set up the view: drag to turn, right-drag to move, scroll to zoom. Part Studio view matches the Part Studio angle and Fit frames the model.
- Under Materials, pick a part and choose its Material, colour, Grain direction and Finish.
- Choose a Scene (Light studio, Dark studio or Workbench), the Size and the Quality.
- Click Render, then Stop when it looks good or wait for Finished. Download picture.
Materials include timbers you'll find in Australian school workshops (Radiata Pine, Pacific Maple, Tasmanian Oak, Jarrah and Walnut), plywood and MDF, acrylic, polypropylene, PLA, metals, paint, rubber and clay. Timber can be oiled (satin) or gloss coated, and the grain direction can be set so it runs the right way.
Tip
Render with Draft first to check the angle, then switch to Good or Best: a finished render carries on from where it got to. Keep Denoise on, and choose Transparent background for a cut-out with a soft shadow that drops straight onto a folio page.
Sizes include HD, Instagram square, A4 landscape or portrait, and A4 print quality (3508 × 2480 pixels). Material choices are saved with the design.
Render picture (PNG): quick and exact
For a fast picture of exactly what's on screen (same angle, zoom and display style, without the planes):
- Set up the view and hide any parts you don't want.
- Export, then Render picture (PNG).
- Choose Size (Screen, High or Print, up to 4096 px) and Background (Studio, White or Clear).
The picture is always light even if SchoolCAD is in dark mode. Click Persp to switch to Ortho for a flat, drawing-like look, or drag Explode first to show how the parts fit.
Video (MP4): turntables and build animations
- Turn the model to a three-quarter view, looking slightly down.
- Export, then Video (MP4).
- Choose Show: Turn around, Build it up (each feature in order, with its name) or Both.
- Pick the Size (HD, Square or Full HD), Length and Background, then Record.
Build videos show feature names, so ask students to rename features clearly (for example Cut finger hole). The video records in real time, so students should stay on the SchoolCAD tab until it says Video saved.
Note
A build video is a great way for students to explain their design process in a presentation or digital folio, and it shows you how they modelled it.
