SchoolCAD lets students hand in their designs and lets you mark them, with no student accounts and nothing uploaded to a server. Work comes back through the places you already use, such as Google Classroom or Teams, as a link or a file.

How students hand in

  1. They click Hand in at the top of the feature tree (it's there when your class link started the task), or Export, then Hand in.
  2. They check the task and class and type their name. SchoolCAD remembers the name in that browser.
  3. They click Make my hand-in, then Copy link and paste it where you set the task.

A hand-in packs up the design, its versions and its feature tree, tagged with the student's name, class, task and the time it was handed in. A small design fits in a link. A design with lots of versions or an imported picture becomes a .schoolcad hand-in file instead, which students attach. Both hold the same information.

Students can hand in again after making changes, and the task card shows when they last handed in. Work handed in after the due date is marked Late for you.

Ask for versions every lesson

A version is a checkpoint of the whole design with a small picture. Ask students to click Versions, then + Save a version, at the end of every lesson with a name such as End of lesson 3: base finished. Versions travel with the hand-in, so you can see how the design developed. That's useful evidence for folios and for checking the work is the student's own.

Note

Versions are kept in the browser with the design. They go with a hand-in, but not with a plain Save file. On shared computers, make sure students hand in rather than just saving a file if you want to see their versions.

Marking one hand-in

Click a hand-in link and SchoolCAD opens it in the Marking view. Everything there is read-only, so nothing you do changes the student's work.

  • Hand-in details: student, class, task, time, Late or On time, and where the design began (blank, tutorial, sample, link or file).
  • The model: turn and zoom it like the Part Studio. Play the build shows how it was made, feature by feature.
  • Versions: click any version to see the design as it was then.
  • Design check: problems in the feature tree, overlapping parts, sketches that aren't fully defined, missing materials and more. Designs started from a tutorial also show which steps are done.
  • Feedback: type it in the box, click Copy feedback and paste it into Classroom or Teams. SchoolCAD doesn't keep it.

Save a copy puts a copy in your own designs if you want to try something on it. Download file keeps a hand-in that arrived as a link.

Marking a whole class

  1. Download the hand-in files from Classroom or Teams.
  2. Drop them all onto SchoolCAD at once (or choose them all in Open file). For links, click Export, then Mark hand-ins, and paste several links.
  3. The class table lists every student with their picture, task, time, Late, starting point and check results.
  4. Click Open to look at a design, then Next to move to the next student.
  5. Copy table copies the list into a spreadsheet for your mark book.

The files and links stay on your computer the whole time.

Tip

Play the build is a quick way to see whether a student modelled a part properly or found a shortcut, and it's a great conversation starter when giving feedback.
